If you have never taken a class with me, this is to make you aware that I RARELY float. I walk my color out on
my predampened surface and soften that color with my blenders. To be truly effective, two shading applications and two highlight applications are all that is needed to create the affect I have achieved.
PREPARATION
I chose to paint this project on an enamel pitcher so the prep is a little different than normal. Using a piece of #0000 steel wool, buff the area and beyond that is to be painted. Using Krylon Matte spray, apply a mist twice, letting the surface dry completely in between. After drying, lightly apply the line drawing, and basecoat as follows:
Sunflowers – Antique Gold
Leaves and flower stems – Jade Green
Using a pencil, lightly divide the petals where one petal overlaps another. Use the line drawing as a guide. Apply a center stem line to the leaves.
Leaves and flower stems have shading of Avocado and a second shading of Avocado+Black Green (1:1). Highlights are Hauser Light Green and a second highlight of Hauser Light Green+Cadmium Yellow (1:1). Accents of Tangelo Orange, Honey Brown and Burnt Sienna were added here and there to tie the palette together. The vein lines were done with thinned Avocado+Black Green mix. (1:1)
