 LET’S PAINT
BACKGROUND
As in any painting, the background is very important to the overall composition.
TIP: To keep rim tint colors from slipping into light col- ored center, tape off center using removable painter’s tape. Place the plate on the lazy Susan to be able to turn the plate as color is added and mopped.
Rim surface is basecoated using Background Red Mix. Dry. Rim surface is faux-finished using wet-on-wet appli- cation of tinted colors. On the palette, put out four paint colors in quarter-sized puddles: Naphthol Red, Brown Madder, Red Violet, and Dioxazine Purple and one more smaller puddle of Vermilion. Add DecoArt Extender & Blending Medium to each paint puddle so that the paint is thin but not runny. Apply a coat of DecoArt Extender &
Blending Medium to rim surface. Paint is applied using a damp sponge. Do not mix the colors on the sponge but dab sponge up and down just enough to place the different colors around the rim surface. The colors are random and wet. If the paint is too dry, spritz water over the surface to add moisture. Toward the beaded rim of the plate, sponge on the darker colors (dark reds and purples); toward the inner edge of the rim surface, sponge on the lighter col- ors (Naphthol Red and just a hint/touch of Vermilion). Use the mop brush to slightly blend the colors; use a piece of crumpled plastic wrap dabbed up and down to give some variance of color. Using the corner of a wet paper towel, clean up the beaded rim by blending in the colors that may have splashed over. Some color interest on the beaded rim is nice with the majority of the blue/purple background showing through. Remove tape and use wash brush with
