CRYSTAL AND BLUE BUTTERFLIES
Transfer only the body and outline of the butterfly; do not trace the aerials and lines (cells) that are inside of the wings.
CRYSTAL BUTTERFLY
See the Step-by-Step on page 65.
Using a thin liner with Lamp (Ebony) Black, draw the outline of the wings and the body. Let dry.
To create a transparency in both wings, use the no. 2 round brush with a diluted White Gray Mix. This will make it look slightly cloudy. Let dry.
Using a no. 1 or 2 round brush, paint the color areas Lilac Mix and the other with Violet Mix. Let dry.
Using a no. 10/0 liner with Lamp (Ebony) Black, draw the small cells (see Step 1 of the Step-by-Step on page 65). Let dry.
With White Gray Mix repaint the side of each cell (Re- fer to the Step-by-Step). Let dry.
Paint the spots with Snow (Titanium) White. Let dry.
Basecoat the body with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Using a 10/0 liner with Light Gray Mix paint the highlights on the body. Next, paint the eyes with Snow (Titanium) White, the legs with Light Gray Mix and the aerials with Snow (Ti- tanium) White. Let dry.
BLUE BUTTERFLY
See the Step-by-Step on page 65.
Basecoat the wings first with Snow (Titanium) White using the no. 2 round. Let dry.
The body of the butterfly is Lamp (Ebony) Black. Let dry. Basecoat the two external wings with Light Blue Mix. Paint the darkest wing with Dark Blue Mix.
Using the no. 2 round brush on the two external wings make a gradation of color from Light Blue Mix to Blue Mix, from inside of the wing to outside of the wing.
With liner no. 10/0 draw the cells with Snow (Titani- um) White. On the darkest wing use Lamp (Ebony) Black. The body is also Lamp (Ebony) Black. Paint the high-
lights with a no. 10/0 liner with Light Gray Mix; the eyes Snow (Titanium) White; the legs Light Gray Mix; and the aerials Snow (Titanium) White. Let dry.
Finally, reinforce the contour of the wings using a no. 10/0 liner brush with Snow (Titanium) White. Using the liner brush paint the stains on the wings with Dark Blue Mix and Snow (Titanium) White. Let dry.
FRAME
Basecoat the frame of the plaque with Black Forest Green. Let dry.
On the palette place Black Forest Green and Emperor’s Gold. Using a sponge, dab the paint alternating the two colors on the frame. Paint the edge of the frame using a no. 4 flat brush with the Emperor’s Gold. Let dry.
FINISHING
Once completed, give two coats of Traditions Satin Varnish.
