28 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 4, 2016
Ilove animals, as I truly believe they are little angels sent down to Earth. This design was inspired by a picture I took of my incredible cat “Theodore,” and I would like to
dedicate this project to all of you who see in felines the win- dows for a magical world.
PAINTING TIPS
The fur on many cats is painted with a lot of very fine lines. This is possible only with many layers and repeating the process many times. For some this may become a tedious and frustrating process. The goal in this feline project is to paint the fur in a loose but realistic way. My cat is easy to paint because his fur doesn’t consist of many refined strokes and is painted with a filbert brush.
PREPARATION
Seal canvas with DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer. Allow this to dry, and then basecoat the canvas in a casual manner using a 1⁄2" wash with Cashmere Beige+Toffee (1:tch). While the colors are still wet, add a small amount of Burnt Umber mainly on left side and in right lower area. Allow paint to dry. Transfer the pattern with black graphite including eyes, nose and mouth, but omitting all the details.
