Has something that tickled one of your senses led you down the path to inspiration and developing an idea for a painting? That is what happened with
me and this piece. The art of chipping away or chiseling wood to make ornamental designs goes back many years. Today it is still prevalent in many areas especially in Eastern Europe where chip art is used to decorate boxes, spoons, steins and even cradles. So finding this chip art carved board gave me a whirlwind of inspiration. I remembered going to Kolasca, Hungary and visiting the Paprika Museum, seeing wonder- ful folk art floral embroidered designs on the ladies’ national costumes and beautiful decorated porcelain with the same folk art-designed flowers. That thought triggered a trip to my linen cabinet to find an embroidered tablecloth from Kolas- ca with brightly embroidered flowers. So when I found this board, inspiration just bubbled to the surface, and I knew I had to paint a Kolasca-style folk art piece and needed to in- corporate the rose, tulip, carnation, and red peppers. I hope you enjoy painting this garden of Kolasca-style flowers in a very traditional folk art way.
