STEP 1: Time was short; I completed this sketch on location in about 15 minutes. I used a pen then added washes of color. Note that the scene is not exactly as I drew it. I did not want to draw those chairs and tables with checkered tablecloths, so I put in a couple of umbrellas instead. I made it my own.
STEP 2: Back in the studio, I noticed a number of mis- takes – places where paint had washed over the pen line and muddy colors. Instead of trying to remove them or hide them, I emphasized them, outlining every change in value or color with my pen. You can clearly see the differ- ence between the left half, which is complete, and the right side which remains untouched.
STEP 3: In the completed sketch, all of the mistakes have been emphasized. I also added some additional cast shad- ows, then outlined them as well so they would fit in with the rest of the piece.
