GROUND
Dry-brush the ground, using a no. 12 filbert loaded with Tarragon+Raw Umber (1:tch). The grass is lined with a mixture of browns and greens from the palette. I used a no. 1 to no. 3 round and a no. 2 liner to stroke the grass. The rocks are a mixture of grays and blues. I used a no. 2 liner and casually dabbed in the rocks here and there. Load a no. 12 filbert with Jo Sonja’s Retarder Medium and sideload into different greens and browns on the palette floating casually along the top of the grass area and here and there under the feet.
TREE
Shade the trunk and limbs with Cobblestone; follow with shades of Raw Umber to Raw Umber+Carbon Black (1:tch). Use a no. 2 liner to add texture to the trunk and large limbs with these same colors.
RIM
Basecoat the rim with Sea Swirl. I used a 1⁄2" oval wash brush to basecoat the rim. Use a no. 2 liner to stripe the rim with Light Red Mix and over-stroke the stripe closest to the rim with Rosewood.
ANTIQUE GLAZE
Clean the surface, making sure to remove all of the graphite lines. Give the surface a coat of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium; this will serve as a protective layer. Dry completely. Using the wet-on-wet method, float with Burnt Umber, using a 3⁄4" oval glaze brush. Float all around the rim, in the corners and within the painted design. Soft- en with a large mop brush. Dry completely. Repeat with a second layer using a no. 12 filbert, darken any shaded areas where needed. Soften with a large mop brush. This process can be repeated as many times as necessary.
FINISHING
Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Prepare the sur- face for varnishing with a coat of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium. This gives the surface the tooth it needs for the varnish to adhere. When dry, follow with three coats of Jo Sonja’s Polyurethane Satin Varnish.
