PAINTING TIPS
DRY BRUSH: Dip a dry stiff bristle brush, into the paint, remove the excess paint by lightly drag the brush on the palette or tissue paper in a figure 8 motion. Test it on your hand (you should not see paint) before applying the color to the surface. It
is important that the brush not get wet, if this happens dab the brush on a paper towel or tissue to take off the excess mosture; keep it dry.
WASH: Mix acrylic paint with water to the point that it looks like ink. In this project, a wash is used to make transparent shades of color.

PREPARATION
Basecoat the surface of the board with Lamp (Ebony) Black. When dry, sand the surface using 400-grit sandpaper, removing the dust with a big brush. When all of the dust is removed paint a sec- ond coat of Lamp (Ebony) Black. Let dry. Transfer the owl pattern onto the prepared surface.
LET’S PAINT
Refer to the Step-by-Steps on next page.
Start by painting the feathers using the dry-brush technique and the no. 2 flat brush with Snow (Titanium) White; painting from the inside out. Paint both owls.
Next, using the no. 2 flat brush with Snow (Titanium) White, dry-brush the pupil of the owls’ eyes. Do not paint the iris of the eyes; it stays black. Paint the highlight on the owls’ beaks.
To intensify the feathers using a no. 2 flat brush with Snow (Ti- tanium) White, dry-brush in the direction from the inside out, strengthening the highlighted areas.
Using the 10/0 detail round brush, intensify the white part of the pupil of the eyes, keeping the iris black. Use the 3⁄8" angle shader with Cadmium Yellow and paint a wash on the pupils. Let dry. Us- ing the same method, make the beak of the owl in the background transparent. Using the 3⁄8" angle shader with Avocado paint a wash over the beak of the owl in the foreground.
Paint the highlights on the feathers using 10/0 detail round with Snow (Titanium) White, and let dry.
