STEP-BY-STEP
FLOWERS, LEAVES, AND HOLLY BERRIES
STEP 1 STEP 2
Using a liner or 10/0 detail round with Sour Apple make short lines around the iris of the eyes from the in- side out. Using a liner or 10/0 detail round with Cobalt Blue, make short lines around the iris eyes of the owl in the background from the inside out and repeat with Avocado on the owl in the foreground.
Using the angle brush with Yellow Ochre paint a wash over both eyes on the left side and with Snow (Titanium) White on the right side.
Using a liner with Lamp (Ebony) Black on the eyes of the owl in the background, make short lines in the same direction. On the owl in the foreground, paint the lines in the eyes alternating True Ochre, Raw Sienna, and Burnt Sienna. Define the borders of the eyes and beak using a round brush with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Cover all the remaining lines that are left from the line trac- ing. Wet the angle brush and discharge the excess water over the paper and load the top of the brush with Lamp (Ebony) Black, discharge once again first over the palette and make one line then over the upper part of the eyes.
STEP 3
Using the angle brush with Yellow Ochre, paint a wash over the left part of beak of the owl in the background. Using the angle brush with Avocado, paint a wash over the left part of beak of the owl in the foreground. Paint Burnt Sienna on the beak as indicated in the Step-by-Steps above.
Paint the highlights on the eyes with a round brush and Snow (Titanium) White. First, dip the brush into Snow (Ti- tanium) White, clean and dry your brush, touch the brush on the left side of the iris and pull it to the right side of the iris just inside the pupil. Next, with the same brush and Snow (Titanium) White, make the upper highlights start- ing in the pupil and pulling the stroke towards the iris.
With angle brush, use different colors to paint a wash in all the parts of the feathers of the owl. Paint highlights were necessary and where more clarity is needed with flat brush and Snow (Titanium) White. Using a round brush with Payne’s Grey, make small feathers from the black area of the border’s eyes toward the area of the feathers.
Coat with your favorite Satin Varnish and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Enjoy!
