ACRYLIC
LARGE LEAVES AT BOTTOM
Basecoat with Raindrop+Titanium White+Husk (1:1). Wash with Sapphire+Husk (1:1). Float shading along the smooth edge of the leaf with French Blue+Husk (1:1). Highlight ruffled edge with a float of Husk. Add Burgundy lines.
LARGE ROUND FLOWER
Basecoat petals with French Blue. Wash the petals with Sap- phire. Paint the inner circle and strokes between outer petals Raindrop+Titanium White+Husk (1:1:1). Outline petals with Husk. Add the smaller center circle with Raw Sienna+Husk (1:1). With this same mix add the second outline to blue petals and the vein lines. Add inner loops using Desert Dawn+Titanium White+Husk (1:1:1). Shade one inner side of this loop with Bur- gundy. Outline small center circle and add interior strokes with Burgundy. With French Blue add vein lines within the loops, the small strokes in center circle, and the dots between the loops.
STRIPES
With French Blue add a 1⁄2" wide stripe around the lid and paint the inside of the pencil well. To bring some color onto the bottom of the box I striped each side echoing its shape.
FINISHING
Mix Jo Sonja’s Satin Varnish+Gloss Varnish (1:1). If I need to mix more varnish I always make sure that all surfaces that you can see at one time have the same varnish on them. I do this because the proportions may be different in each batch and this would show when the piece dries. Varnish the inside and outside with several coats. Add hardware and enjoy.
artist’s sketch
A member of SDP since 2003, Susan
Quinn has been studying art – with inter-
ruptions – since the early 1970s. It was in
1998 that Sue took up decorative painting
in earnest. Sue’s love of traditional stroke-
work techniques took her on several trips to
Europe following her retirement as a school
librarian. “My favorites,” she says, “are designs from the Black Forest region of Germany and the Alsatian region of France. Not surprisingly this area is the birthplace of Pennsylvania Dutch deco- ration!” Susan lives in Lancaster County, Penn. where she teaches at Steph’s Folk Art Studio.
