MAKING THE PAINTING A UNIT
Assess the finished painting as a whole unit, not as individual design elements. Add BR accents on some of the darker pink petals, maybe a touch of BR softly blended onto the edge or the tip of a petal. Accent one or two of the leaves with RR. Strengthen dark values within petals and leaves, if necessary, with BC+IB. Tickle the edge of
a couple of the light petals with OC+IB+(TW) using the droplet brush. Soften. Strengthen a highlight here or there using CL+TW. See Step 4. Doing these things will bring the painting together, making it a unit and more pleasing. See the finished painting.
COLOR BAND
Fill in the area of the band from the line that you drew across the bottom of the surface, all the way from edge
to edge and down to the bottom edge of the surface with BC. This is a transparent color, so the background pattern will show through. If you wish, you may add a little IB to the corners of the color band for shading, but keep it subtle. See the finished painting.
LETTERING
Allow the paint to dry completely before applying the lettering.
• Transfer the lettering onto the color band.
Since the color band is dark, go over the lines several times and press hard. The surface will not dent.
• Remove the tracing, carefully peeling off the drafting tape.
• Basecoat the leaf on the far left with OB+IB+CL+TW. See Step 1. Wipe off the brush and load with OC+IB. Lay in the vein area beginning at the base of the leaf and working up toward the tip of the leaf. See Step 2. Overstroke with OB+IB+CL+TW. Begin at the tip of the leaf and work down the narrow side of the leaf. The angle of the brush should be about 45 degrees and flatten out as you move down the leaf. Repeat on the wider side of the leaf. See Step 3. Strengthen the dark area with BC+IB. Wipe off the brush and apply CL+TW-W highlight. See Step 4. This mixture should be a light ivory color. Apply as desired, blending and wiping the brush often to control the highlight. Add vein lines using the chisel edge of the brush. See the finished painting.
CENTERS
Using the No. 2 droplet brush, apply little circles of OC+IB in a cluster. Pick up a little CL on the brush and pull across each of the dark circles, leaving one half of the dark showing. Wipe off the brush and drag a little RR over the yellow using a light touch. This tones down the intensity of the yellow. Wipe off the brush and touch a little TW here and there for a highlight. See Step 4.
