TURBAN SQUASH
Marian Jackson
A painting like this is suitable for beginners in colored pencils as
long as they realize that multiple layers are what create the smooth application. A layer placed on top of another “polishes” the one underneath. This painting has at least three layers of each color. The number of layers is dependent on your touch but try not to get too heavy on the first layer. Also note that all layers don’t have to be the same color. For example, you may apply a base of Pumpkin Orange then shade with Sandbar Brown, then Sepia. This means that the darker areas might have three layers – so make sure the base layer covers to the same degree.
The combination of pencil brand and paper is equally important. If you make substitutions, your results may differ.
Painting with colored pencils is no different than any other medium.
Objects need to have form; that is values to create shape. Light, medium dark, very dark, highlights! A full range of values creates depth, drama, and interest.
Blending between values and/or colors for a smooth transition or a mixed color is fun. Don’t be afraid to try!
