behind the scenes
Karen Penner, our host as we shot our photos in the Warkentin house
For this photo shoot, we selected the Warkentin House in Newton, Kansas. This proved to be a trip down memory lane as our headquarters used to be in Newton in the old train depot and we had several photo shoots for The Decorative Painter at the
Warkentin House. The
Warkentins completed
construction of their
new home in 1887. This
magnificent home has
a lavatory near the front
door for dusty travelers
to freshen up before their
visit, and the fine work of
English carpenters shows on
the main staircase and ball and
spindle fretwork in the foyer.
The music room has crystal
chandeliers from Czechoslovakia and the tile, furniture, artwork and
stained glass come from as many as seven countries. It was a spectacular
backdrop for the many pieces of decorative art in this issue. As we toured
the house for the photo shoot it was impossible not to wonder what life would have
been like on any given day for the family that lived here so many years ago.
We could not help but go through some of the magazines from years past at this setting and admire the artwork and photography of this home. It made us also
reflect on how far we have come at SDP. Much to our surprise we found that many of the issues in the ’90s had about seven projects per issue. We are delighted to have 12-15 projects
in our issues at this time. We have come a long way and are very thankful to our members for joining this journey and for supporting the efforts of SDP all these years. As we reflected on our magazine it was brought to our attention the logo created by Joan Johnson, and how fun it would be to paint the logo as it is or add your
color choice and style. You will find the pattern
for our logo on page 22.
We hope you
enjoy your trip down memory lane as you go through this issue of The Decorative Painter.
