FILLER STROKES: #6/0 brush
Add three Titanium White strokes here and there around the design as needed for balance.
BORDER STROKES: #6/0 brush
Paint Titanium White comma strokes around the outside circle of the design. Add Titanium White dots with a stylus between
each stroke. Just eyeball them; no need to trace anything.
UNDERNEATH
On the underneath side, there is one daisy painted in the center. Then paint Titanium White comma strokes with a dot in between each around the edge for a border.
ANTIQUING
Mix a little slurry of Payne’s Grey and Scottie’s Antiquing Patina and, using an old brush, push it into the crevices of the raised edge of the tray. With an old rag, wipe off the slurry from the raised parts. This will create nice shadowing down inside the raised areas. I also chose to leave the design bright without antiquing but added some Payne’s Grey with the rag around the area where the flat surface meets the rim for a bit of shadowing.
BORDER OF THE RIM
If you have a raised edge on the tray’s rim, you can highlight it with Rich Gold and/or Silver. I used my finger to apply a small amount of each color to highlight the fruit and scrolls. You may need several coats. Do whatever is appropriate for your tray. Have fun creating!
GLASS LINER
In order to use the tray for food items, place a clear, glass plate on top. Finding one with a matching gold or silver rim enhances the look of the whole piece.
Scottie Foster has been a member of the Society of Decorative Painters since 1979. When she joined, she had recently returned from living in Germany where she studied the German-style folk art of Bauernmalerei which she calls Bavarian Folk Art. Scottie has enjoyed teaching this very decorative style of folk art to local classes as well as seminars around the US and foreign countries for over thirty years. She is now “semi-retired” and has been downsizing by selling some of her painted treasures on her website. All of her books are still available on her website too. Email: scottie@bavarianfolkart.com
