PREPARATION
Lightly sand the surface, wipe it clean, and glue the ends of the wicker down onto the base of the tray (instructions for this can be found in the manufacturer’s packaging material). Trace the design onto tracing paper, and then center it on the painting surface. There is a centered horizontal line that runs nearly the entire length of the design. Make certain that this line is not tilted one way or the other, so that the design will be centered. Using gray graphite paper, a ruler, and a stylus, transfer the main lines of the design. Do not transfer the lines for the trees, the smoke from the chimney, the horse’s harness and reins, or the horse’s hoof prints in the snow.

This piece is painted in three steps. Refer closely to the photos of each step as you paint. Step 3 is depicted in the photo of the finished piece.
The technique used to create this winter farm’s basecoats requires an application of thin color to the raw wood surface. This technique, often referred to as stain painting, helps to open the wood grain and allows the color to penetrate. It also allows the first step to remain transparent and soft, enabling it to support the heavier applications of the steps that follow.
