BASECOATS
Paint over all the main design lines using Sable Brown on the appropriately sized liner brushes. When this is dry, erase the graphite lines. With Sable Brown on the liner brushes and the no. 3 round brush (choose which brush best fits the area being painted), fill in all windows and the door on the house, the left side of the chimney, and the lower-right corner of the barn door opening (forming a triangle). Apply the same color to the left side of the barn shed (the small building that sits to the right of the barn), the right side of the house shed, and the house steps.
With the appropriately sized liner, apply Burnt Umber to the upper-right corners of each window (forming a tri- angle), the top of the house door, the line that runs along the bottom of the top ledge of the chimney, and the right side of the steps. The unpainted areas of the barn door opening, barn shed, and house shed are also Burnt Umber.
The dog, the horse, and the part of the man’s hat that is visible in the sleigh are applied with Sable Brown on the no. 1 liner, and are outlined here and there (see photo for placement) with Burnt Umber on the mini liner. All the fencing is the same with the Burnt Umber painted along the left side of the posts and bottom of each rail. You have now painted the pattern guide for the following transpar- ent, stain-painted applications:
SKY AND CLOUDS
With clean water and the 1" wash brush, dampen the sky from the mountain line to the top of the piece. While the surface is wet, apply the Pale Yellow mix along the top of the distant mountain line using the 1" flat and extend- ing halfway up. The paint will bleed and run, so do not pick up or tilt the surface. Wipe the 1" flat on a paper towel to remove excess paint, and then use it to pick up Baby Blue. Apply this starting at the very top of the sky, walking it down horizontally (this will be both a side-to-side and horizontal movement) until it reaches the center of the yellow area. Wipe the brush again, and lightly blend where the colors meet. Using the Crown brush, quickly scumble Hi-Lite Flesh clouds randomly throughout the wet sky. Leave plenty of space between the clouds, allowing some of the sky to show through. While the clouds are wet, use the Pale Yellow mix to tint their tops here and there, giving them the look of reflected sunshine. With the Lavender mix on the Crown brush, apply random shadows to the bases of the clouds. Dry the surface using a hair dryer on its lowest setting. Now dampen the entire sky area, and then use the 1" flat to apply thin, Pale Yellow wisps hori- zontally over the entire sky. After every stroke, wipe the brush on a paper towel to remove excess paint.
