 President’s lette
President’s letter
 Dear SDP Friends,
Artist Jeannine Roberts Royce has said that we should have a grateful heart for
grace and good fortune, for all who guide and support us, for all that is good. As we finish this year and begin a new, let’s take a look back on the “year that was.” We had a successful Conference in San Diego in May. The venue was near perfect, despite fires
only a few miles away. Unfortunately, some of our members were affected by this event. To show you the dedication and passion
our artists have for SDP, I received a call
from a member scheduled to be a classroom monitor the next day at Conference. She had learned she and her family would need to evacuate because of the fast-moving fire. She was concerned she would not be able to fulfill her SDP obligation. I told her not to worry “one speck”—it would be taken care of. Fortunately, she did not have to evacuate and
was at Conference. I was impressed by her sense of responsibility for the obligation she had undertaken and her dedication to the Society.
Having the Conference in San Diego offered many outside activities for our members. I believe you will find some of the same benefits for next year’s event at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois (just outside of Chicago). Our Teachers Committee has nearly completed the class schedule, and it looks to be challenging and delightful with something for everyone. The resort is very easy to navigate. The events are close together, limiting the amount of walking required. Don’t miss this opportunity to view the great art, experience the Expo, and see fellow artists. We look forward to an amazing new year with great artists appearing in The Decorative Painter, exciting new projects, and the news and photos from your fellow chapters around the world.
If you have not renewed your membership for 2015, now is the time to do it. Just go online to www.decorativepainters.org/membership.php or call (316) 269-9300 ext. 105. As you know, our membership has many benefits. Chapters in the United States and around the world offer an opportunity for artists to socialize and paint
with other artists who share a love of decorative painting. These chapters host travel- teachers, offer classes, organize community service projects, and encourage fun and relaxation. What could be better?
Would you like to become a teacher or improve your teaching skills? SDP has a Teacher Development Program for that. If you are interested in becoming a better artist, the Certification Program offers great tools to help you achieve Certified Decorative Artist or even Master Decorative Artist designation. Beginning artists have many opportunities to grow their skills, from learning brushstrokes in our New Member Kit to completing beginner projects in The Decorative Painter. As our skills progress, and we crave more projects to complete, members have access to our growing archive of online back issues and bonus projects.
As Jeannine Roberts Royce reminds us, we need to be thankful for our blessings and good fortune and those around us who support us. What better way but to surround yourself with artists who share your passion and creativity?
Paint with a happy heart!
