LET’S PAINT
FLOWERS
Brush-mix Light Buttermilk+tch Napa Red and pull fine lines pulled out from the dark end of the turned edge. STEP 7: Load the no. 2 round with Wisteria and tip with Royal Purple. Form these petals with a pointed comma stroke - using along point and quick pressure. Allow room to extend the outer tips later.
STEP 8: Use the no. 5/0 liner and Royal Purple to extend the dark end of the petal to a fine point or curl. Pull lines of Wisteria out from the light end of the petal.
STEP 9: On the three large flowers, use the liner handle to dot Antique Mauve where the stem will join the flower. Use a large stylus to dot Wisteria at the point of the small pink flowers, and Antique Mauve at the point of the small violet flowers.
Load the no. 5/0 liner with Buttermilk. Highlight the An- tique Mauve dot on the large flowers with a curved line and pull fine lines out from the dot on the small violet flowers.
LEAVES
COLOR mIx: Dark Green Mix: Plantation Pine+Napa Red (12:1)
Refer to the Leaves Step-by-Step as you paint.
Load the no. 2 round with Reindeer Moss Green and tip with Dark Green Mix. Build the leaves with pointed comma strokes using a long point and quick pressure. STEP 1: Pull from the outer edge back to the middle vein, starting with the lower strokes on each leaf.
STEP 2: When the first strokes are dry, pull in the strokes above.
STEP 3: The stroke at the outer tip should be created last. STEP 4: Tidy the outer edges of the leaves by using a liner to join the strokes together as needed. Extend the outer tips to sharp points using the no. 5/0 liner loaded with Dark Green Mix.
Use the no. 0 liner and Antique Mauve to pull in the middle vein and leaf stems.
STEP 5: Pull in the remaining stems with Reindeer Moss Green on the no. 0 liner.
Pull in the tendril with Wisteria on the no. 5/0 liner. STEP 6: Use the no. 5/0 liner to accent the green stems and curls with Dark Green Mix.
Accent the tendrils with a brush-mix of Royal Purple+Wisteria.
Darken the leaf stems with a line of Napa Red, extend- ing them partially into the leaf vein.
Refer to the Flower Step-by-Steps as you work.
STEP 1: Load the no. 4 round in Buttermilk, and tip with Antique Mauve to create Petal 1 in the two large flowers. Use the no. 3 round to create Petal 1 in the small- er middle flower. Form these with fan strokes that end in short, curved tails pulled into Petal 2. Petal 1 will overlap Petal 2 for now.
STEP 2: This petal requires two coats for intense color. Load the no. 4 round with Toffee and tip with Napa Red for Petal 2 in the two large flowers. Form these with a fan stroke that has a blunt finish at the stem. Use the no. 3 round for Petal 2 in the smaller middle flower. Form this with a fan stroke that finishes with a straight tail at the stem end. Petal 2 now overlaps Petal 1.
STEP 3: Use the no. 0 liner to pull lines of the loading color out from where the stroke ended, leaving the outer edges the middle value. Round the end of Petal 2 on the large flowers. Adjust the streaking as required (refer to Brushstroke Studio Part 1 in Issue #1, 2014), and use the White Wash background color to tidy the outer edges where necessary.
Use the no. 5/0 liner to pull short lines of Buttermilk out from the light end on Petal 2. Shade the outer corner of Petal 1 on the two large flowers with short fine lines of Napa Red.
Use the no. 0 liner loaded with Reindeer Moss Green to form the stamens. Pull a line, and then push down on the end of the brush tip to make a small blob. Lift straight up and off of the surface.
STEP 4: Form the small flowers with fan strokes that end with a straight point at the stem end. For the flowers marked 3 on the pattern, load the no. 0 round in Wisteria and tip with Royal Purple. For the flowers marked 4 on the pattern, load the no. 0 round in Buttermilk and tip with Antique Mauve.
STEP 5: This is found on the overlapping edge of Petal 2 on the two large flowers. Load the no. 2 round in Napa Red and tip with Light Buttermilk. Form with a pointed comma with a long point using quick pressure. Start at the outer corner of the fan stroke, staying on the tip of the brush as you pull a line around to the side of the petal. Now apply the quick pressure, fanning the stroke into Petal 2.
STEP 6: Use the no. 5/0 liner loaded with Light Buttermilk to extend the light end of the turned edge into a fine line.
