SKILLBUILDER
FAN STROKE
STEP 1
Position the brush on the midline of the shape, laying it down to the ferrule. The ferrule must be anchored on the surface. Note how the brush tip is 1⁄8" in from the outer edge of the shape.
STEP 2
Fan the brush open by twisting the ferrule back and forth in small increments. Stop fanning when you have reached the edges of the shape.
STEP 3
Push the open brush tip to the outer edge of the shape. Notice how the sides fan out even more. Note that paint is not deposited behind the brush.
STEP 4
Start to release pressure gradually while pull- ing the brush back toward the opposite end of the shape.
STEP 5
Continue to release pressure while drawing the brush back.
STEP 6
At the end of the stroke, the brush will be re- laxed back up to the chisel. There are two dif- ferent options for finishing: a.) Lift the brush straight up and off the surface. b.) Continue pulling while releasing pressure until the brush is standing up on the chisel, and then slide to the side on the chisel to form the curved tail.
STRAIGHT POINTED FAN STROKE
STEP 1
Pull the stroke in the same fashion, right up to the point that the brush tip is relaxed on the chisel. Now pivot the chisel 90 degrees.
STEP 2
Slide on the knife edge of the chisel to form the straight tail.
