Society Update
2015 SDP SERvICE AWARDS
Through our publications and programs, we educate and empower individuals to become painters, to promote deco- rative painting in their communities, and—through our vast network of chapters, teachers, and businesses—to enrich lives by painting together.
Each year, we honor the most outstanding achievements in service at the SDP Service Awards. Your nomination is essential for SDP’s Awards Committee to identify and award these outstanding individuals and businesses.
Nominations are being accepted in the following categories:
DEDICATED SERvICE AWARD
This award, established in 1984, honors outstanding and dedicated service to the Society.
OuTSTAnDInG CHAPTER SERvICE AWARD
This award honors a chapter member for outstanding and dedicated service to the chapter.
uSInG FACEBOOK FOR CHAPTERS
Facebook has increasingly become the way we keep in touch with friends and family, share photos, and play. For SDP chapters, Facebook offers a simple way to get online without learning how to build a website or have a dedicated webmaster. Whether you want to share your art and ideas with a private group, chat, recruit new members, promote your events online, or simply have a landing page for your chapter information, Facebook offers a solution.
Here is what you’ll need to get started:
yOuR PERSOnAL FACEBOOK ACCOunT
You probably already have a personal Facebook ac- count. This is where you post to your Timeline and Like or comment on the latest posts from the friends you follow.
A personal Facebook account should be created only for yourself, not an organization. Example: Jane Smith can have a Facebook account, but Jane’s Artistic Originals or her local SDP chapter should use a Page, not a new account.

FACEBOOK PAGES AnD GROuPS
After you have a personal account, you can create a Group or a Page.
Groups are great for organizing small groups that all share with their personal accounts. Members can be made adminis- trators (it’s best to have two or three to spread the responsibil- ity!), but everyone can post as himself or herself. This is ideal for allowing many people to post artwork, make comments, and interact on a topic. Groups can be private or public de- pending on your needs. Perfect for planning events!

SILvER PALETTE AWARD
Established in 1977, this award honors exceptional contribu- tions by an individual in furthering the purposes of the Society.
PRISCILLA HAuSER AWARD FOR BuSInESS & InDuSTRy
This award is given to an individual or group that has shown consistent and exceptional business contributions to the decorative painting industry and to the Society.
To nominate your choice, go to: www.decorative painters.org/serviceawards.php. Download and com- plete the forms for the appropriate category. All nomina- tions must be postmarked by March 1, 2015, to have your nomination(s) considered.
Awards will be presented at the 43rd SDP International Conference & Expo, Pheasant Run Resort, St. Charles, Ill., May 13, 2015.

Pages are better for organizations (such as an SDP chapter) or businesses that want to share information in the name of that organization (posts come from OUR CHAP- TER instead of Jane Smith). This is the best place to post your chapter contact information, upcoming events, calls for submissions, and photos from classes. Because Pages are public and indexed by search engines, this is a great way to spread the word about your chapter and recruit new mem- bers in the area. Let them know we’re here!

The best part is, you don’t have to pick just one! It is per- fectly fine to create both a Facebook Group and a Facebook Page. Post your class registration info to your Page and then discuss the class in your Group. By using each type of space in the best way, you will find you can focus less on how to share information and spend more time enjoying the discussion.
Make sure to follow SDP at www.facebook.com/ societyofdecorativepainters. Let us know when your chapter’s Facebook page is live by posting to our Page, and we will do our best to mention you in an upcoming post. We love to share photos and upcoming events of our chapters as often as possible.
Let’s share the fun we are having and let everyone know what painting is all about!
