70 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 3, 2015
Ihave always loved painting projects that have lots of details. The design of this project was inspired by tapestries that date back to the 1400s. I wanted to create those beautiful lines and patterns with paint.
I hope you enjoy painting it as much as I did.
PREPARATION
Sand the plate well and wipe off the excess dust using a slightly damp rag. Mix together Lamp Black+DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer for the basecoat. (Hint: I like to mix the base color with sealer for the first coat to save a step.) Allow to dry completely. Lightly sand the plate to remove any raised fibers in the wood and wipe off excess dust. Apply second coat of just Lamp Black. Let dry. Trace the pattern using light transfer paper. I find it helpful to use a bright colored pen instead of a stylus to transfer the pat- tern; the pen makes it easier to keep track of your tracing. You may find it helpful to tape the pattern to the plate with blue painter’s tape to prevent shifting while tracing.
