base. Lightly control the colors to stay close to the shape placed; blend each one separately. Use the liner brush to apply the highlights.
ON PEACHES: Use a Light Value of the peaches to out- line one side of the dewdrop, leaving the other side open. Refer to the Step-by-Step on page 87. Place the Dark Val- ue on the base. Lightly control the colors to stay close to the shape placed; blend each one separately. Use the liner brush to apply the highlights.
BUTTERFLIES
OUTLINE: Use a mixture of Yellow Ochre+Raw Umber+ Naples Yellow Light (1:1:tch). Highlight parts are Titanium White. Fill in the space between the outlines of the wings with the Outline Mix+Titanium White (1:tch). Use the same mixture for the body.
YELLOW PART OF THE WINGS: The base part of the wings is pure Titanium White. The top of the yel- low section is created by using a mixture of Titanium White+Cadmium Yellow Pale. Blend gently only where the colors touch each other.
GREEN PART OF THE WINGS: The base part of the wings is pure Titanium White. The top green section is created by using a mixture of Titanium White+Oxide of Chromium. Blend gently only where the colors touch each other. Tint with Cadmium Orange+Burnt Sienna.
SCROLLS
Use the flat part of the no. 2 sable bright brush to cre- ate the lines and the liner brush for the small curves. For the entire line of scrolls use the Light Value of the leaves. Highlight the outside of the large curves with Titanium White. On the small parts of the curves use Titanium
White+Yellow Ochre+Cadmium Yellow Pale.
FINISHING
Allow the paint to dry completely.
Strengthen the highlights, darks and accent colors by using the dry-brush technique following the color chart.
Apply two coats of Artist’s Matte Varnish only on the top part of the tray, avoiding the edges. Let dry well between each coat.
Apply two coats of the Glossy Varnish on the edge of the tray, to the feet, as well as on the dewdrops on the painting. Let dry well between each coat.
ASSEMBLING
After the painting and the varnishes have completely dried, you can then assemble the tray.
HANDLES: Hold the brass handles on the top of the tray by positioning them even to the edges and parallel to each other. Make sure that the base of the handles does not cover any part of the painting. Using a ruler and a pencil, mark where the handles should be placed. Mark down on the reverse of the tray where the screws will be inserted. Using a handle screwdriver, gently attached the screws on each edge of the handles.
FEET: Turn the tray upside down and, using a ruler, mea- sure where the feet should go making sure they are even distance from the edges, but close enough to the edges so they can be seen. Turn them upside down where the flat part will be attached to the tray and the round part to the bottom. Apply glue and hold in place until dry.
Your unique tray is now finished. Enjoy it and make sure to share this Sweet Gathering with the ones you love!
