  cluding the metal end, with Medium Yellow. Use a no. 2 liner to basecoat the wooden tip with Dark White and the graphite tip with Medium Gray. Use a no. 2 shader to basecoat the eraser with Medium Red. Use a no. 8 filbert to glaze over the border with Dark Blue. Dry completely.
Use a no. 2 liner to outline the book and pencil with Dark Blue. Use a ruler to keep the pencil straight. Define more page separations with Raw Umber, and line the pencil sketches with Medium Gray.
tHird LaYer: Using the wet-on-wet method, shade around the pencil and around the edge of the pencil well, using a no. 8 shader and Dark Blue. Use a no. 2 liner to shade the graphite tip of the pencil with Dark Gray. Use a no. 8 shader to float the first shade on the sketches with Medium Gray. Use a no. 8 shader to float a shade on the eraser with Dark Red. Use a no. 8 filbert to brush-mix Paynes Grey+Dark Blue (1:1). With this mix, over-stroke the border. Start in the corner, leaving a dry- brush texture as you pull your brush toward the center of the design. Dry completely.
FoUrtH LaYer: Start with the wet-on-wet method. Use a no. 8 shader and shade the wooden tip, the pencil, and the metal end of the pencil with Raw Umber. Use a 10/0 liner to define the detail on the metal end of the pencil with Raw Umber. Use a no. 8 shader to flip-float a highlight on the eraser with Light Red. Pick up Light White in your dirty brush and brighten the highlight. Use a fully loaded no. 2 filbert to highlight the pencil with Light Yellow. Use a no. 2 liner to highlight the wooden tip of the pencil with Medium White, and to highlight the graphite tip with Light Gray. Pick up Light White in your dirty brush and brighten this highlight. Use the same brush to highlight the detail on the metal end of the pencil with Light Yellow. Pick up Light White in your dirty brush and repeat in the brightest area. Use a no. 12 shader to float a shade in the book pages. Dry completely.
Using a no. 2 liner, outline the pencil with Paynes Grey.
FiFtH LaYer: Start with the wet-on-wet method. Using a no. 8 shader, float to shade around the pencil and the rim of the pencil well with Paynes Grey. Use the same brush to deepen the shade on the sketches with Dark Gray. Dry completely. Use a no. 2 liner to darken the linework on the sketches in the darkest areas only and dot the seeds with Dark Gray. Use a 10/0 liner to line the quote on the inside of the desk with Paynes Grey. Dry completely.
siXtH LaYer: Give the entire piece a coat of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium. Dry completely. Use the wet-on-wet method, working one area at a time. Use either no. 8 or no. 12 filbert or a 3⁄4" oval wash loaded in Paynes Grey to glaze the background. Start in the corners, around the strawberries, here and there around the leaves, and around the daisy centers. Use the 1⁄4" to 3⁄4" mop brush to soften as you work. Use a no. 12 filbert to glaze the rim with Light Yellow. Use a 3⁄4" oval wash to glaze the back side of the lid in the corners and around the outside edge with Dark Yellow. Inside the desk, use blue painter’s tape to protect the sides of the desk, and then use the same method to glaze the Light Yellow area around the quote with Dark Yellow. Dry completely. Using the wet-on- wet method and Raw Umber, repeat the glaze on all of the Light Yel- low sections. Glaze just in the corners on the yellow border and on the larger areas; allow the first layer to show through. Dry completely.
