Student athlete finds a new passion in golf
By Justin Hubbard
Camryn Wright’s athletic journey took quite a turn a couple years ago.
Wright, a junior at North Oconee High School, grew up competing in gymnastics. A gymnast at 3 years old, she competed for Georgia Elite in Watkinsville across all four areas of the sport: uneven bars, beams, vault and floor exercise.
But when Wright was 14, she had to give up her gymnastics career after numerous injuries. She broke her thumb on the bars and required elbow surgery to repair cartilage damage. Wright even underwent heart surgery to slow down her heart rate because she suffered from supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
With those conditions piling on, Wright retired from gymnastics. In doing so, she was giving up a sport she dearly loved, particularly when it came to the bars event.
“I just loved to fly on the bars,” Wright said. “It was so much fun for me. I always did my best on bars and won a few state championships on bars.”
Her gymnastics days were over, but Wright soon found another athletic outlet in golf.
Wright began playing with her father, Chris Wright, and really ramped up her training during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when in-person instruction was shut down at NOHS.
North Oconee High School junior Camryn Wright helped the girls golf team win the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state title last spring.
