quickly classified as an essential worker. But, of course, Nicole and the girls were home.
Mike had always tended to the home landscape. They have a wide variety of azaleas and half a dozen different types of roses. He had grown some tomatoes, but barely two weeks into the pandemic, they ramped up their COVID-19 garden. It started with a decision to plant watermelon and cantaloupe.
“We went from eight tomato plants to a lot more,” Mike said. “We canned tomatoes, made salsa and pickled everything you could pickle. We made it bigger because I knew that Nicole and the girls could be here to look after it. They could make sure the weeds were kept out.”
When it was time to can, they discovered another shortage. Because they were not the only people putting up fruits and vegetables, there was a shortage of canning supplies. Mike said he spent no small amount of time looking for jars, rims and lids. He said he also found that tomato cages vanished from shelves. So he made his own.
The girls, Reagan, a seventh grader, and Addison, a fifth grader, pitched right in.
“Reagan liked being out in the garden more than Addison,” Nicole said. “She is always outside anyway. She helped clear out the woods behind the house.”
