“We have tried to instill in our girls that nothing comes free and that you have to work for it,” Mike said. “If you want fresh salsa and homemade pickles, you can’t just go to the store and buy that. They really enjoyed seeing the tomatoes come up and the cucumbers. They would brag about it to their friends about what they were doing.”
Cofer said that the interest in outdoor living sparked a surge in sales of patio furniture, barbecue grills and ornamental shrubs and trees.
“People were staying at home instead of taking trips,” he said. “They wanted to enhance their outdoor living space.”
Valerie Hinesley at Piccadilly Farm in Watkinsville said that she was uncertain how the shutdown would affect their retail sales, but the past year has been their best ever.
“We normally just break even,” she said “Last year, we actually made a little money. It is kind of funny.”
They reacted to the shutdown with sales by appointment.
“People who had never been customers did a lot of pickup orders,” she said.
“It does take a spark to get that interest going,” said Hinesley. “I think this year it will be busy as people are still working on their little projects.
