Atticus G. Haygood, who’s associated with Watkinsville Woods’ Pulpit Rock, preached at Salem Methodist Church in 1862.
Hubert explained that in addition to the land grants, settlers often came together because of church and may have moved to Salem to be a part of the same faith community. “Society at that time was much more faith based,” she said, “so everybody would come together and they would celebrate together. It was almost a community center, because
they would have meetings and church services.”
A Dr. Hester, who was born in 1840 and died in 1896, is buried in the Salem Methodist Church cemetery.
