Page 3 - Mindfulness
P. 3

Despite my training, my role as an educator and my approach in delivering education which is undertaken and delivered in a mindful way, on reflection, for a few days I was in a less than mindful state. And guess what? During the Christmas period I lost and found my glasses six times, caught the side of my car door, hunted for my phone three times, missed a flight, sent a half- finished email to someone and forgot a medical appointment! My relationships at work became a little fraught, my communication unclear and I also notice now, that I wasn’t sleeping as well. I’m sure there’s more than that but, take note –
when you are not in a mindful state, things go wrong.
This non-mindful process is so different than my typical one... I take a look across Careel Bay to notice the light across Pittwater in Sydney’s northern beaches. I drop in to either Rocko or James at my favourite coffee shops for a quality flat white, sit at Avalon Beach watching the Ocean for five minutes or so to get centered, and then listen to a Desert Island Discs podcast on
the way to work. I’m thankful for the day before and the day ahead. At night I do the same in reverse. Not surprising that I become more effective. I seem to have the ability to have a day of less distraction, a day that flows, concentrating on the most important things but not only that, doing it in a way that works. In reflection, I feel grateful for the time I got to experience.
