P. 8

Doubt and uncertainty are two of the most common things I help people with. It doesn’t matter how successful we are, we all have them.
Doubt and anxiety are a potential destroyer of moments of glory, moments of success. They can create distraction, as can over-excitement. When you overcome them, so much is possible.
Under normal conditions, training and mental rehearsal have a major impact on success. We now know the brain waves in mental rehearsal parallel the brain waves in the actual undertaking of the task. However, sometimes a voice inside the head tells us the situation is different; this is the time of failure. We can’t get the words out, our foot doesn’t work in the right way, our breath is heavy.
Working with World class classical saxophone soloist, Amy Dickson who plays to audiences in concert halls all over the World and World Champion water skier,
Leanne Campbell one can’t help but admire their ability to be in the moment when they do what they do. Years of hard work, which of course is the key to most success, but also such people’s ability to tap into a fast-mindful state when they’re under pressure. In Leanne’s case, she’s balancing on a piece of wood holding a rope being pulled at at 170km/hour often in less than smooth waters. Reflection time has to be fast. Rory Steyn, Mandela’s former bodyguard had an even more significant role. Total concentration, highly tuned peripheral vision to add to his sophisticated training is absolutely necessary to protect the World’s favourite person. He now does the same for Oprah.
