P. 45

The operation was a success and just after Christmas Ruth and I went to see
            him in “intensive care”.
He had tubes into him just like a human patient except these were protected
and mounted on bungee type attachments, so he could move about his box,
            but not pull them out.
After another few days he improved even more and went out of his box into
            an outdoor exercise area.

This was better for him with lots and fresh air and freedom of movement.
Unfortunately, a few days later he took a turn for the worst and died.

We were very happy that we had been able to do all we could to help and that
in the end he had enjoyed a pain free time in the open air with lots of care.
If it had not been for that insurance we could never have afforded the
operation and after care. It was all well over £2000 in 1991.....goodness
            knows how much today.
We were able to see the operating theatre and recovery room with all the
special gear including overhead cranes and heavily padded floors and walls.
The equipment costs to provide that level of care will have been huge.
