Notes on the Story.
The Visitor Centre did eventually open in July
1989 after many delays caused by various extra
planning regulations imposed by the local
authorities.
Mr David Kaye who very kindly performed the
official opening to our new Centre was the
Managing Director of Daniel Thwaites Brewery of
Blackburn in Lancashire. Mr Kaye was also the
Honorary Treasurer of the Shire Horse Society at
that time. Daniel Thwaites Brewery do still use
Shire Horses and excellent pictures can be seen if

The aeroplanes that disturbed Sammy were
using a local practice bombing range on the
seashore close by, at Friskney near Skegness. The
aeroplanes were fighter aircraft of one sort or
another from NATO bases all over Europe. They
used to call at RAF Coningsby which is also close
by, to refuel and probably for the pilots to get their
sandwiches.
The aeroplanes where Sammy could see the
pilots waving, were American A10 infantry support
fighter bombers and did go slower and far lower
than many of the others.
The horses at Northcote even today, do get
used to the fast low flying aircraft but from time to
time one or two get a bit too low for comfort.
