CHAPTER 24
THE QUEEN’S SILVER JUBILEE 1977
To mark this important milestone in the life of our Queen and indeed all of us living locally,
the Parish Council and other local committees decided to hold a huge fête.
Mrs Ward of the largest local farming family offered the field at Carrington, behind the
village hall. This same venue was normally pressed into service for the annual Traction
Engine Rally.
In the picture far right is Mrs Ward and centre looking our way is Mr Faulkner the Head of
the local Primary School.
A new committee was formed to organise the event that promised to be the largest of its
kind even seen in our locality. Every local community was arranging something different, I
remember Stickney our nearest neighbouring village held a grand parade that began and
finished in the local secondary school grounds.
All these events had to be dovetailed so as not to conflict with their timing. Everyone
wanted to go to all of them!
Our event for New Bolingbroke and Carrington involved the usual Annual Traction Engine
Rally local exhibitors, a huge fancy dress parade and sports day for all the children and
their parents. A sit down meal was provided for all the local pensioners and children in a
large marquee on the site.
The day itself was blessed with excellent weather, it is very fair to say a good time was
had by all!
One particular memory that sticks, is sitting in our garden watching all the various different
aeroplanes arriving at RAF Station Coningsby.
