Personal injury procedure
The following is a procedure to be followed in the unlikely event of a personal injury whilst
at work for AMS Ltd.
If you sustain any personal injury you must:
✓ Notify your supervisor / manager
✓ If required, call for assistance from an appointed First Aider
✓ Complete the accident book personally as soon as it is practical
If you are unable to complete the accident book, your line manager will complete it with you
or on your behalf.
If you find someone who is injured you must:
✓ Assess the person to see if you are able to treat the injury until assistance arrives
✓ Call the site office and request that the appointed First Aider attends the incident
✓ Be available to assist the First Aider in the treatment of the injured person
✓ Provide any information that may assist the First Aider with details of the accident if known
Personal accident reporting
An accident can be described as any unplanned event that results in:
Injury; or
Ill-health; or
Damage to or loss of plant, materials etc.
All accidents are incidents. However, the definition of an incident is wider in that it includes
dangerous occurrences and near misses.
This procedure has been established to ensure that incidents (which include accidents and
near misses) are bought to the management’s attention. This is necessary to prevent
recurrences and to enable legal obligations for reporting certain incidents, as required by the
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR),
to be complied with.
The incidents that must be reported to the appropriate enforcing authority (local authority or
HSE) are those that result in:
Fatalities (to anybody)
A major injury (to employees or the self-employed)
A person not at work (e.g. a member of the public) being taken immediately from the scene
of an accident to hospital for treatment
Employees or the self-employed having more than seven days off work in line with the
current fit note procedure.
Employees or the self-employed contracting certain diseases
A specified dangerous occurrence
