Alwyn
Alwyn (H151) is a classic A class yacht built in Hobart in 1923 from beautiful Huon pine. Owned and raced by Peter
Costolloe, she has been at HBYC since the late 60s.
Alwyn was designed by Alfred Blore of Hobart and is listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels. In 1926,
she won the Royal Hobart Regatta John Colvin and Lipton Cup Trophies.
After her many successes in Tasmania, she relocated from Hobart to Melbourne in 1938, arriving at HBYC in the late
60's. Peter Costolloe has maintained and raced her ever since. In 2006, eighty years after winning the Lipton Cup
Trophy in Hobart, she won the Classic Yacht Division of the Lipton Cup at RYCV here in Port Phillip Bay.
She’s run aground twice—at St Kilda in the 1950s and once on the return trip from Geelong. From 2008-2010, she
was extensively restored by Peter here in the HBYC yard. This almost 100-year-old yacht maintains a steady 8.3 knots
on a reach and reaches 10.4 knots downwind. She raced every year from 1984 to 1996 in the Melbourne to Geelong
passage race. In 1996 she won her division in 283 minutes that included 45 minutes of drifting. Today her focus is
Geelong Wooden Boat festival racing. The 2016 festival recognised her as the oldest racing yacht in the festival. Peter
continues to race her in the Classic Yacht series and she actively represents HBYC to this day.
