also started soaking the torts once a week,
although Libby may still prefer a shower.
In 2012, the Bureau of Land Manage-
ment added another habitat so Hugo could
move in. He’s been a great addition to the
program. He’s so friendly and so hungry.
Visitors enjoy seeing him crunch through
kale and cacti. Having him in the habitat
also gives us the opportunity to discuss the
proper care of pet tortoises. We even have
the handouts of the recommended tortoise
diet that we can give to visitors.
We’d like to thank the many volunteers
who have taken care of the tortoises for the
past twenty years. Let’s make it another
twenty! If you would like to see the tortois-
es in action, feeding starts at 8 a.m., every
Wednesday and Saturday morning. They
also get soaked every Monday morning
starting at 8 a.m.
And if you are thinking of an anniver-
sary gift, china is the appropriate gift for 20
years. Wouldn’t it be nice to put tort chow
on china?
Maybe not.
Happy Birthday to the Rock Stars!

It was a party worthy of the tortoises. Sadly,
there were no kale cupcakes available.
What was available in abundance was the
feeling of camaraderie of the volunteers who
had gathered to celebrate the 20 Anniversary

of establishing the Tortoise Habitat. As part of Pat Williams
the event, Sue Kolar — Habitat Coordinator,
decided to hold the first “tortoise popularity John Schaaf voting
for his favorite tort
contest.” The contest was a big hit with the at-
tendees.
Framed and matted photos of the
resident Rock Stars, accompanied by
slightly embellished narratives, were
on display for voting on which tor-
toise was the most popular amongst
the 60 plus guests. The volunteers

with the results announced at the

end of the party. Lucie, the Grand
Dame of the Habitat, won by a landslide.
Then the door prizes were announced: everyone voting for their
favorite tort
would be eligible
for the framed
photo of their pre-
ferred Rock Star.
