Sharon’s Slant
(continued from page 10)
Nellie Pooler Chapman learned dentistry from her husband and ran their northern California practice when Allan
traveled to Virginia City, Nevada, to work his silver claim. Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the first woman in the world to
earn a dental degree. Practicing in Lawrence, Kansas, she trained her husband, James, in dentistry and they
practiced together after he earned his dental license.
Historians call the 1850s the “Golden Age of Medical Quackery” and Chris Enss devotes a chapter to frontier
medicine to confirm that title. Luckily, we no longer soothe a teething baby’s gums with the brains of a freshly
killed rabbit.
The struggles and careers of Georgia Arbuckle Fix, Patty Bartlett Sessions, Mary Canaga Rowland, Ellis Reynolds
Shipp, Franc Johnson Newcomb and Flora Hayward Stanford also are portrayed in this book. Photographs of most
of the women accompany their stories, putting faces with the words. The courage, compassion and skill
demonstrated by these women eventually led to their acceptance as qualified physicians.
Movies To The Mojave
(continued from page 9)
When was the last time you visited Bonnie Springs Ranch Old Nevada? If it has
been years, you are missing one of the great icons of Las Vegas. Old Nevada
broke ground 40 years ago with families in mind. The town could be straight
from Wilbur McGaugh’s movie set. Treat your out-of-town guests to dinner at
Bonnie Springs—order a Bison burger. If you visit on a Saturday or Sunday you
can witness a real-staged gunfight complete with a jailbreak, a melodrama and an
almost hanging.
In the past, Bonnie Springs might have been a stopover for wagon trains and it
might have been only a bar in the desert but Bonnie, a self-made woman with vision, breathed life and fun into the
land. Because of her love of the old west and her knowledge of set design, Bonnie has turned this property into a
one-of-a-kind ranch that leaves visitors in awe while protecting Red Rock Canyon for future generations.
Friends of Red Rock Canyon are proud to have Bonnie Springs Ranch as a partner and friend. We wish them
another 60 years of success. Way to go, Bonnie.
