Dear Friends Members,
In the fall 2011 issue of “the Rock,” you were introduced to some of the people who make this organization function and
learned of the vital work of our committee chairs. Now I would like to explain some of the work done by your Board of
Directors.
Though Friends is a nonprofit volunteer organization, it operates very much like a business: the Board of Directors report
to over 300 members, works with a staff of over 100 volunteers and is financially responsible for the assets of the
organization. The Friends’ board is a working board.
In other words, it conducts the business of Friends in accordance with Federal and State laws, our By-Laws and in
harmony with the will of the membership. Working with the committee chairs, the board creates the budget for the next
fiscal year and then presents it to the membership for approval at the Annual Meeting. The board members oversee and
approve expenditures from that budget. At monthly board meetings, Bureau of Land Management requests for volunteer
assistance and funding for a variety of projects are discussed and voted on.
The seven members of the board are elected to serve for two years with overlapping election periods; four directors are
elected in even years and three directors are elected in odd years. The time commitment for a director can be from four to
ten hours per month; officers (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer) generally will spend between 10 to 20
hours a month helping Friends.
This is a very brief outline of what it means to serve on the Friends’ board. As you can see, your board members are
dedicated to Friends of Red Rock Canyon and they work hard to keep the organization moving forward to make important
contributions to Red Rock. I have personally found my experience on this board to be very rewarding.
We are also looking for new board members! There are four board positions, president, vice president and two directors,
eligible for election in September and we are seeking nominations to fill those spots. If you are interested in making a
difference by serving on the board, please contact one of your board members at info@friendsofredrockcanyon.org or call
Chuck Williams at 395-7080.
