Gaming is set free
Gaming is now on every device — not just dedicated consoles — and the major game makers have set their characters free from their owned platforms.
One example is Super Mario Run which released right before Christmas last year. It was the first time Nintendo has let one of their games on to a smart phone — and it was downloaded 10 million times on the day of release. Let’s also not forget Pokémon Go arrived in a big way — it got gamers out of their lounge and onto the streets. Pokémon Go also successfully incorporated Augmented Reality into a gaming environment, on a mobile device.
Blurring lines between gaming devices
Mobile games are now also accessible on TVs and vice versa — and again, Nintendo’s ahead of the game. Its Switch console
is a hybrid video game console which is shaped similar to a tablet computer, but can also connect to a television display through a docking station.
At the same time, the ‘gaming’ entertainment space has evolved with time, it now includes everything from mobile gaming to the rise of spectator gaming. In early 2017, gaming related content was the fourth most popular YouTube video genre. In addition to that, the world’s leading video platform and community for gamers, Twitch now reaches over 5.7 million people monthly.
Latest data from GlobalWebIndex shows that Southeast Asian markets are at the forefront of mobile gaming with more than 3⁄4 of the online population from markets like Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia stating that they use their smartphones to play games.
