Glen McLaughlin was always polite and unassuming in his dealings with others. His circle of
contacts was wide – bankers, sheriffs, mayors, police chiefs, fire chiefs, Legislators, corporate
officers – to mention a few. His advice, opinion and expertise was sought by all levels of
society. He was honored numerous times. The Texas Legislature recognized him with a
Joint Resolution before both Houses. His expertise and abilities were recognized by
Governors as he was appointed the first Chairman of the Texas Commission on Law
Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCOLE) and served in that position longer
than any other appointee.
Glen was also the teacher of the Menʼs Adult Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in
Austin, Texas. He was revered as a friend by many.
The Main Classroom at the Texas DPS Training Academy is dedicated to Glen. Countless
other awards and accolades came to him. He never pursued individual glory. In his own
quiet, professional way he sought to “Improve the Police Profession Through Training”. The
Glen H. McLaughlin Scholarship Foundation has been established to further the Goal of
Professionalism in Law Enforcement. Donations to this Foundation may be tax exempt due
to TPAʼs 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status.
Suzy McLaughlin, Glenʼs daughter, and Courtney Leal, Glenʼs granddaughter, were present
for this prestigious announcement. TPA Executive Director Tim Ryle presented both ladies
with a plaque honoring their dad and grandfather establishing the Glen H. McLaughlin
Foundation Fund.
