REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Like most of us, we grew up with our parents right
beside us. They are the ones who build and taught us
the meaning or concept of conscience. As we grow
older day by day, what we perceive now as good and
evil came from the knowledge that we received from
our parents starting from childbirth to the present.
The concept of conscience gave us on how we should
judge what is good and evil. But from what I
understand about conscience is it is a grace from right path towards discipleship which is choosing to
God because I think this is what differentiates us obey and believe His words.
from animals and this is what I think makes us
humans.
Personally, I grew up in a similar way as some of my
group mates who have watched cartoons wherein
they showed characters representing a devil or an
angel on the shoulders that symbolizes a person’s
conscience. Watching those cartoons gave me an
early understanding of what is good and what is bad
and it helped me identify whether the actions I was
doing were angelic-like or devil-like. I think that we should let discernment guide our conscience,
being able to understand this at an early age allowed
me to get a grasp of what it was like to be following
the path of how a Christian Disciple should act -
towards others.
Recalling my past knowledge and beliefs on what
conscience is, I have come to realize that I
misunderstood conscience for a long time during my
childhood. I used to believe that our conscience is a
voice in our heads that tells us whether something is
good or bad and scolds us through guilt for choosing
to do the wrong actions. However, conscience does
not scold a person nor does it guide anyone towards
evil. Our conscience is the voice of God that directs
us towards a path to Him by knowing and obeying
what is truly good. However, we cannot solely rely
on our conscience to be a good disciple. We must
also learn how to form our conscience through
praying, learning the scriptures, reflecting, and
building relationships with the people around us.
I remember how cartoons often portray conscience
as the angel and the devil on our shoulders. It is an
effective way of summarizing the use of conscience
to people. In relation to this, I have learned that in
decision-making, having a conscience is important. I
will constantly be asking myself whether the
decision I will make is something that I will not be
regretting at the end of the day. And with the help of
my conscience, I will surely be able to choose the
My misconception about conscience was cleared
during our discussion in Theology class, I used to
believe that it is the inner voice in my mind that
pushes me towards good or evil upon making
decisions or actions. Although it is true, it may not
be entirely correct, because it is also the ability to
witness, incite or bind, excuse, accuse, and torment,
all of which is guided by God's grace and perfection.
Therefore, as we walk down our path of discipleship,
because through it we will be able to always choose
between two goods and not evil, and at the same

time it would help us to succeed in searching for
God's will and how we can follow it as His disciples.
