         Working together by staying apart
Shen Remzi - Field Engineer, UK
Being a field team member, and normally spending most of my time in the data centre, it hasn’t been easy to work with the current situation - but there aren’t any circumstances that I haven’t been able to overcome. To keep safe from the virus, I always make sure that I set aside some time before and after a task, to wipe my surrounding surfaces and laptops with anti-viral wipes to prevent any possible cross-contamination risks. I also try, as much as possible, to avoid lifts and other enclosed areas and take the staircases where ever it’s practical to do so. And by careful planning, to ensure we get it right first time, we can minimise the time we spend on site. While we remain client-focused, we always seek to deliver services safely.
For the business to continue as usual, we are making sure that we go the extra mile and are able to deliver clients services to the highest quality and keep to our timelines.
It’s very important for each of us to make sure we all keep safe during this time, so let’s use vinyl gloves, hand sanitisers, visors and masks where necessary, and be conscious of every surface we touch.
Onyekachi Ogbue - Field Engineer, Nigeria
Working in a Covid-19 environment has been a challenge. The risk of field engineers contracting the virus is very high, due to the physical contact nature of our job, but we are doing our best to be safe.
As field engineers, we must always visit sites for new activations, fault resolution and network upgrades to keep the network alive. The telecom industry is an essential service during this pandemic in Nigeria, enabling the population to remain connected online and, while we work, we must maintain safety measures and the use of PPE to prevent contracting the virus.
We have adopted new ways of making sure that we deliver for our clients. For example, we have improved the resilience of the existing network designs by
adding more end-to-end protections through several service providers, upgrading the existing network design/infrastructures and improving proper documentation of the network designs (Low-Level Design and High-Level Design). This makes troubleshooting and the execution of Remote Hand and Eyes support requests seamless.
The clients' expectation of providing them with 100% SLA, increases daily. This is challenging during the pandemic; nevertheless, WIOCC is committed and determined to deliver this expectation.
