Promoting Literacy
Seaford College Library has a new look this year, along with a new librarian, Miss Bayley, who we welcome to the Seaford team.
Miss Bayley currently holds dedicated library lessons for Year 7 to 10 students in conjunction with their English teachers. Sixth Form students can also use the library as a dedicated workspace throughout the day. Students have been excited
to see all the new changes made to the library
this term, including the wonderful book-inspired desk wrap designed by Mrs Grantham-Smith from our Art Department. Students have really enjoyed guessing the many different book characters which has, in turn, ignited a passion for reading.
Students from all year groups have enjoyed competing against their peers with the new quick thinking, logistical games the library has on offer during their break and lunch times, throughout this term.
In a drive to improve literacy across the school students, Year 7-10 have been engaging with the Accelerated Reader program during their library lessons. All students have completed the Star Reading test which provides them with a reading age, reading level and reading target for the year. Students have fully engaged with the scheme and have been recognised and rewarded for their fantastic efforts in reading this term.
Students celebrated National Poetry Day in the library with some Poetry Open Mic sessions during October. Students found some fantastic poems to share, and some were even inspired to write their own poems and take up the mic to perform them. The event was a great success and students have requested for its return next year.
