Careers
This term, the Year 9 students considered their skills for the workplace, students in Years 7 and 8
were introduced to careers in the NHS and saw how useful data can be, and we were treated to two
very interesting talks at our Careers Teas.
In our first Careers Tea, Mark Bedford spoke about
his work in the Metropolitan Police. Mark, who
has led high-profile investigations, described the
way suspects are interviewed, the training police
officers receive and the benefits of having a degree.
He also singled out good communication and
teamwork skills as key to rising through the ranks.
Suspects and victims might be reluctant to divulge
information, so empathy and the ability to build trust
were vital, he said.
We next welcomed Mark Blenkinsop, who has had
a varied career working with well-known companies
in the fashion world having studied graphic design
at university. He presented his top tips, which
included Follow Your Passion and Always Say Yes.
In Green Week, students were invited to explore
the range of green jobs available, and in National
Apprenticeships Week, they were encouraged to
look at where an apprenticeship can take you, as this
becomes a very viable alternative to university. We
have also had National Careers Week, during which
several members of staff were very happy to show
what previous jobs they have had and the skills they
developed.
