IGCSE English Literature
English Literature is a subject which teaches students to observe things with a
critical and analytical eye, and then to formulate those ideas into essays. These
skills prepare our students to go on to A Level subjects and beyond. Students will
cover a breadth of traditional and contemporary literature over the course.
Course Outline:
The course consists of 3
components, as listed
below:
1. Poetry and Prose
(60% of course, 2 hour
examination)
• Section A – Modern
Drama – a choice from
two questions on John
Steinbeck’s Of Mice
and Men
• Section B – Poetry – a
choice of two questions
based on a set poetry
anthology (prepared in
class)
• Section C – Unseen
Poetry
2. Literary Heritage –
Shakespeare Text (20%
of course, coursework)
• Students will revisit
a Shakespeare play
studied in Year 9 and
write one analytical
essay (minimum 800
words)
3. Modern Drama (20% of
course, coursework)

Students will study a
modern drama text
and write one analytical
essay (minimum 800
words)
