In Passing
The Chicago Zoological Society was saddened by the passing of three former
members of our Board of Trustees: Janice K. Emmert, Mary Ann S. MacLean,
and Clyde W. Reighard. Jan, Mary Ann, and Clyde will be greatly missed.
Jan Emmert was a founding member of the CZS
Women’s Board, established in 1992. She was
el elecectetedd toto aa ttwowo-y-yeaearr tetermrm aas WWome ’n’s BBoardd
President in 2006 and served in a number of other
leadership roles, including chairing the Board’s
Membershipp Committteeee, , seservrviningg asas BBoaoardrd SSececreretataryry,
and volunteering on the Nominating and Bylaws
Committees. As Women’s Board President, Jan also
was a CZS Trustee from 2006 through 2008.
Mary Ann MacLean was elected to the Board of Trustees
in in 1199995,5, llater servingg as a Life Trustee from 2013 until her
passing in 2016. As a Trustee, she chaired the Edud cation
Committee and the Conservation & Education Committee,
served on the Development Committee, and was Co-Chair
of thhe 2000055 WhWhiirll. IIn daddidititionon ttoo heherr BoBoarardd seservrvicice,e, MMarary y
Ann chaired the Education Task Force for our 2004
Strategic Plan, which formed the basis for our Center for
Co
Consnserervav tion Leadership.p In 2013, the Mary Ann MacLean
Conservation Leadership Center was dedicated in hher hhonor.
Clyde Reighard became a CZS Trustee in 1984
and served as Board Chairman from 1993 to
19999, , prp ovovididiningg leleadaderershshipip aatt anan iimpmportant tiime
for the zoo. During his tenure as Chairman,
CZS opened The Swamp, The Living Coast, tt
and the Rice Conservvatatioionn BiBiolologogyy anandd ReReseseararchch
Center, and CZS scientists began research into the
discipline of conservation psychology. A former
executive with The Northern Trust Compmpanany,y,
Cl Cl dyde became a CZS Life Trustee in 2005.
