The Voting FISH CATEGORY
The contest had two rounds of voting. First, each 3RD PLACE
photo was viewed by our panel of distinguished Nicholas McCarney,
judges. They included award-winning Chicago Sycamore
Zoological Society staff photographer, Jim Schulz,
as well as two other professional photographers.
The judges selected their top seven picks in each
of the following three categories: mammal, bird,
and reptile/amphibian/invertebrate/fish. They
also chose their top five from all of the entries
to be considered for the grand prize.
For the second round of voting, we went to
the public. After posting the judges’ choices on
our website, we asked each voter to select a winning
photo in each of the three categories, plus one
grand-prize winner. Between August 24 and
September 7, we received more than 6,000 votes.
The results were then tabulated for one grand-prize
winner and a first-, second-, and third-place winner
in each category.
The Chicago Zoological Society
thanks the photographers who
sent in their stunning photos.
Also, thanks to everyone who
participated in the voting! Many of the photos entered in this year’s contest are featured in a photo mosaic
at the Café del Sol plaza. The beautiful image that features Whirl, the zoo’s Amur tiger,
is 9½ feet high by 19½ feet wide and was created using 26,676 1-inch by 1-inch photos.
