SCIENCE The Picture of Health
The Chicago Zoological Society’s veterinary staff has long practiced
the innovative approach of incorporating human physicians into
their medical treatments for our animals. For example, when Ben
Orangutan had his appendix removed in 2018, Society vets teamed up
with medical personnel from AMITA Health Hinsdale and La Grange
who had performed this surgery many times on their human patients.
Anatomy between nonhuman primates and humans is similar, and their
expertise helped make this procedure a large success.
Dr. Ivančić assesses Foli Tiger Human physicians also recognize there is a lot they can learn from
during a health check-up. veterinarians. Medical personnel from the Radiological Society of North
America have invited Dr. Marina Ivančić to speak at their conference
this year to discuss how veterinary specialists are similar to their human
physician counterparts.
Each year at this conference, doctors, hospital administrators,
radiology technicians, and industry executives gather to discuss the
newest techniques and innovations in radiology. Veterinary radiology,
as practiced by Dr. Ivančić, is exactly the innovation the 2019 conference
is looking to highlight this December.
In her session, Dr. Ivančić and colleagues will help radiological
professionals understand their role in the “one health” initiative uniting
human and veterinary medicine. Session participants will learn about
the history of zoological radiology, animal imaging with PET scans, and
how veterinary radiologists are similar to “human” radiologists.
