POPULATION PLANNING AT THE ZOO
Polar bears. Pangolins. Orangutans. Okapi.
These are all animals that you can see on
a visit to Brookfield Zoo—though you might
be more familiar with some of these animals
than others! For instance, while there are
orangutans in over 50 institutions accredited by
the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA),
Brookfield Zoo is just one of two accredited
institutions with pangolins on exhibit. Have
you ever wondered how the Chicago Zoological
Society chooses what animals to house at the
zoo? Here, Bill Zeigler, the Society’s senior vice
president of animal programs, gives a behind-the-
scenes look into the zoo’s population plan, or why
you see the animals you do on a trip to the zoo.
