Planeando para la pérdida
Desde el principio sabemos que las cosas que dábamos por sentadas antes de la pandemia de COVID serían casi imposibles ahora. Pero no pudimos prepararnos para resistir nuestro optimismo. Máximo nunca pudo procesar la cantidad de tiempo que estarían cerradas
las fronteras en Aotearoa Nueva Zelanda. Ninguno de nosotros estaba preparado para el tiempo que tardarían los sobres en viajar entre los países donde esto solía ser muy predecible, cómo muchos servicios postales nacionales simplemente se negarían a enviar sobres a Sudamérica o Nueva Zelanda. Todavía no podíamos creer cuando grandes eventos de arte como la BienalSur, que en 2021 nos ofreció una invitación formal para presentar, de repente se retractaba y nos rechazaba, después de largas y prolongadas rondas de procedimientos de solicitud, presupuesto y aceptación. Esto ocurría en todas partes, en todo tipo de profesiones, pero la crueldad de ello nos chocaba. Con el fin de mejorar las posibilidades del proyecto, esperábamos pérdidas a cada paso, pérdida de sobres, pérdida oportunidades de reunirse, pérdida de exposiciones, perdida de trabajo. La disposición a continuar en un terreno tan inestable se convirtió en una práctica de fe, en hacer por las ganas de conectarse. El proyecto se basó en experimentos oportunos, tomando las pequeñas posibilidades que existían y llevándolas lo más lejos posible. Descubrimos que las amistades artísticas pueden ser extraordinariamente duraderas
y robustas en una época en la que los mecanismos del mundo (los viajes, los servicios postales, los sistemas sanitarios, las economías y los sistemas de financiamiento artístico, los sistemas de producción del sector cultural) se estaban desmoronando.

circunstancias? ¿Qué es realizar este trabajo? ¿Qué es hacer un trabajo cuando los anfitriones se están cayendo? Somos oportunistas, fluidos, rechazados, afirmados, remodelados.
En todo el mundo, todo el mundo está lidiando con esto de alguna manera.

From the beginning we know that things
we could take forgranted before the COVID pandemic would be almost impossible now. But we couldn’t prepare to resist our own optimism. Máximo could never quite process the amount of time the borders in Aotearoa New Zealand would be closed. Neither of us were prepared for how long the envelopes would take to travel between countries where this used to be very predictable, how many national post services would simply refuse
to post envelopes to South America or New Zealand. We still couldn’t quite believe it when major art events such as BienalSur, which in 2021 offered us a formal invitation
to present, would suddenly turn around and reject us, after long and protracted rounds
of application, budgeting and acceptance procedures. This was happening everywhere, in all manner of professions, yet the cruelty of it nonetheless shocked us. In order to improve the project’s chances, we
expected loss at every turn, lost envelopes, lost chances to meet together, lost exhibitions, lost work. The readiness to continue on such unstable ground became
a practice of faith, in making for the sake of connecting. The project rode on opportunistic experiments – taking the small possibilities that did exist, and pushing these as far as possible. We found that artistic friendships can be remarkably durable and robust in a time when the mechanics of the world (travel, postal services, health systems, economies and artistic funding systems, the production systems of the cultural sector) were all breaking down.

How to continue under these
circumstances? What is it to realise this work? What is it to make work when the hosts are falling over? We are opportunistic, fluid, rejected, affirmed, reshaped.
Everywhere in the world everyone is dealing with this somehow.
