Advantages of Reading
As an intellectual thing, a publication is prototypically a composition of such great length that it
requires a substantial investment of time to write and a still significant, though not so extensive,
investment of time to read. In the restricted sense, a publication is a self explanatory section or part
of a longer composition, a use that reflects the simple fact that, in antiquity, long works needed to
be written on many scrolls, and each scroll needed to be identified from the publication it included.
Therefore, for instance, each component of Aristotles Physics is referred to as a book. From the
unrestricted sense, a publication is the compositional whole of which such segments, whether
called books or chapters or parts, are components.
The intellectual content in a physical book need not be a composition, nor even be called a novel.
Books can consist only of drawings, engravings, or photos, or such things as crossword puzzles or
cut-out dolls. At a physical book, the pages can be left blank or can contain an abstract group of
lines as support for ongoing entries, e.g., an account book, an appointment book, an autograph
book, a laptop, a diary, or a sketchbook. Some bodily publications are made with pages thick and
sturdy enough to encourage other physical items, like a record or photograph album. Books could
be distributed in electronic form as e-books and other formats.
Although in ordinary academic parlance a monograph is understood to be a specialist academic
work, instead of a reference work on a single scholarly topic, in library and information science
monograph denotes more broadly any non-serial book complete in 1 volume (publication ) or a
finite number of volumes (a novel like Prousts seven-volume In Search of Lost Time), in contrast to
sequential books like a magazine, journal, or newspaper. A passionate reader or collector of books
is a bibliophile or colloquially,"bookworm". Books are also sold everywhere. Books may also be
borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010, roughly 130,000,000 different titles
had been published. In some wealthier countries, the selling of printed books has diminished due
to the increased use of e-books.
In the 2000s, as a result of growth in availability of cheap handheld computing devices, the chance
to share texts through electronic means became an attractive option for media publishers. The
expression e-book is a contraction of"electronic book"; it refers to a book-length book in electronic
form. An e-book is usually made accessible through the internet, but also on CD-ROM and other
forms. E-Books might be read either via a computing device with an LED screen such as a
traditional computer, a smartphone or a tablet computer; or by means of a portable e-ink display
device known as an e-book reader, such as the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo
eReader, or the Amazon Kindle. E-book readers attempt to mimic the experience of reading a print
publication by using this technology, since the displays onto e-book readers are much less
reflective.
